چکیده

Observations of traveling ionospheric disturbances (TIDs) associated with atmospheric gravity waves (AGWs) generated by the moving solar terminator have been made with the Millstone Hill incoherent scatter radar. Three experiments near 1995 fall equinox measured the AGW/TID velocity and direction of motion. Spectral and cross-correlation analysis of the ionospheric density observations indicates that STgenerated AGWs/TIDs were observed during each experiment, with the more-pronounced e€ect occurring at sunrise. The strongest oscillations in the ionospheric parameters have periods of 1.5 to 2 hours. The group and phase velocities have been determined and show that the disturbances propagate in the horizontal plane perpendicular to the terminator with the group velocity of 300±400 m s that corresponds to the ST speed at ionospheric heights. The high horizontal group velocity seems to contradict the accepted theory of AGW/TID propagation and indicates a need for additional investigation.

A study of Traveling Ionospheric Disturbances and Atmospheric Gravity Waves using EISCAT Svalbard Radar IPY-data

We present a statistical study of Traveling Ionospheric Disturbances (TIDs) as observed by the EISCAT Svalbard Radar (ESR) during the continuous IPY-run (March 2007–February 2008) with field-aligned measurements. We have developed a semi-automatic routine for searching and extracting Atmospheric Gravity Wave (AGW) activity. The collected data shows that AGW-TID signatures are common in the high...

Generation of Artificial Acoustic-Gravity Waves and Traveling Ionospheric Disturbances in HF Heating Experiments

We report the results of our ionospheric HF heating experiments to generate artificial acoustic-gravitywaves (AGW) and traveling ionospheric disturbances (TID),whichwere conducted at theHigh-frequencyActiveAuroral Research Program facility inGakona, Alaska. Based on the data from UHF radar, GPS total electron content, and ionosonde measurements, we found that artificialAGW/TID can be generated ...

A statistical study of ionospheric profile parameters derived from Millstone Hill incoherent scatter radar measurements

[1] Diurnal, seasonal, and solar activity variations of the bottomside electron density profile parameters B0 and B1, representing the F2 layer thickness and shape, are studied using a large incoherent scatter radar dataset for Millstone Hill covering the period 1976–2002. These results are compared with the latest IRI model. Our statistical study is characterized by morning and afternoon falls...

Relationship between propagation direction of gravity waves in OH and OI airglow images and VHF radar echo occurrence during the SEEK-2 campaign

We report simultaneous observations of atmospheric gravity waves (AGW) in OI (557.7 nm) and OH airglow images and VHF radar backscatter from field-aligned irregularities (FAI) in the E-region during the SEEK-2 (Sporadic-E Experiment over Kyushu 2) campaign period from 29 July to 9 August 2002. An all-sky imager was operated at Nishino-Omote (30.5 N, 130.1 E), Japan. On 14 nights, 17 AGW events ...

Empirically modeling ionospheric electron density variations using F107, E107 and MgII indices based on long-term incoherent scatter radar observations over Millstone Hill

Each of three solar flux indices, F107, E107, and MgII core-to-wing, has been tested as a solar activity proxy to model empirically electron density Ne measurements made by an incoherent scatter radar during the period of 1976-2001 over the height span of 1501000km at Millstone Hill. It is found that deviations of model values given by the three indices to the data are practically the same, reg...
